What can you use the app for?

S4ve.as is a site that allows users to share any number of files of any size. Users can use the site to store the file(s) for 24 hours, at which time they are deleted. So the service is designed for the sharing of files with other people in near real-time – it is not a permanent file hosting site. Users simply upload their file(s) to the site, and they receive a link to the file(s). The link is already shortened by the bit.ly link shortener, so it is easy to share. Users cannot delete their links before the end of the 24-hour period, although the site is considering adding this capability. In addition the site is considering allowing people to leave files on the site for longer than the current 24-hour period. Users can see the date/time when the link will expire on the file's landing page. Statistics are available for the link to the file. By appending a + to the end of the file's link, the user will be redirected to the site's statistics page for that file, where they can see detailed traffic information about the file. Users can also view the file size and type on the file's landing page.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

S4ve.as was launched in July 2009.

What are the differences to other apps?

Competition to S4ve.as comes from sites such as MediaFire and Box.net. MediaFire has unlimited file storage but the files are limited to a size of 100MB. Box.net's free service allows unlimited file storage, but for a free account the total storage is limited to 10MB. A paid account raises this limit to 10GB. S4ve.as is currently the only service offering unlimited files and sizes, however it has the 24-hour limit. Look for this to change soon with a paid offering from S4ve.as.

Who would you recommend the application to?

S4ve.as is recommended to anyone who has a need to share files over the Internet. It is possibly the only service on the web available for free that does not have a file size or total storage limit. The 24-hour limit is not a problem for most people, who need a place to store a file just long enough to be able to share it with their friends or business associates. The site is not at this time the answer for permanent hosting of large files, however.
